Lelu, Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia

Lelu, Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia

March 1, 2010

Distance Traveled to Date: 6258nm

We arrived in Kosrae, the easternmost of the Caroline Islands, and a State in the Federated States of Micronesia at 1000 Monday, March 1.

Don picked up officials from Immigration and Agriculture in our tender and brought them out to Starr, at anchor off the town of Lelu on the east side of the island. We had completed the necessary procedures to enter the Federated States of Micronesia by 1200.

Kosrae is a beautiful, high island about 81/2 miles long and 6 miles wide with a mountainous interior, surrounded by a coral reef. It is an island with lush, verdant vegetation and is often called the ” Garden Island of Micronesia”. Kosrae has its own language which is spoken at home, but everyone also speaks English, which they learned in preschool. It has a population of around 6000 people. Kosrae, like the islands of the Marshall Islands, is experiencing a drought.
