Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th.

0500 Sun just starting to come up

We departed Prince Rupert yesterday morning and caught the ebb tide to ride south thru Grenville Channel and got big boost, hitting 13kn for a short time. That is a 5kn increase for our steady 8kn Starr.

We were passed by Western Towboat’s 130ft Gulf Titan towing a 1×4 (100 x 400ft) barge loaded to the hilt with containers from SE Alaska heading to Seattle.

I had a nice chat on the VHF with the Gulf Titan skipper and we talked about the electronic chart system that he was using.

This captain makes the Seattle-Alaska run year in and year out and Western Towing has tried virtually every electronic charting system that is out there.

He uses Rose Point Coastal Explorer and like my friend, Jim Waltz, the Sein boat skipper, thinks the Coastal Explorer’s current charts are much more accurate than Nobeltec, MaxSea or any other system they have tried so far.

Phew! Just missed hitting a 40ft log that was laying low in the water and hidden in the trough of a small wave. At first glance, it looked like just a bit of seaweed laying in a current/tide line. Better pay more attention to where we are going, after all it is Friday the 13th.

Hi Don and Sharry. Always a pleasure to see your posts in my email. And I
liked the short note about Gulf Titan. Brought back some fine memories. I
used to deckhand on Camppbell Towing”s (Wrangell based) Leonard M., a 97”
tug and we also towed barges back and forth from Seattle to S.E. No
electronic charts then, only paper and the skipper”s good memory and radar
reading skills to know our position. Lots of wintertime rough weather, we”d
go as far north as Cordova.

Anyway, enjoy the ride! If you stop and see Pierre and Tove, tell them I
    said hi.
